Parents of children with special needs have a lot on their plates. Between doctor and therapy appointments, IEP meetings, and normal day-to-day duties, adding one more thing to the agenda can feel overwhelming. Regular visits to the orthodontist can actually be a high point in the week when you choose a practice that is both fun and understanding.

When your child needs orthodontic care you want your provider to be understanding and sensitive to the unique needs of your child. Dr. Piper is an orthodontist with over 30 years of experience working with children and families of all kinds, including children with special needs. He is also a parent and knows that each child is special and deserves an individualized approach.
As your orthodontist, Dr. Piper will take the time needed to ensure that your child has a positive experience. For the child who prefers a private setting with low stimulation, parents may request an individual treatment room. Additionally, Dr. Piper has developed useful calming techniques including weighted blankets, pre-medication, and spreading out appointments into small manageable procedures as the child can handle them.

If braces are required, it is helpful to prepare your child for what they will experience during the procedure. You can show them pictures, videos, or use a visual chart to help them know what to expect. Good oral hygiene is critical so plan on helping your child with brushing if you are not already.
Please know that Piper Orthodontics is sensitive to the realities of children with special needs. We are committed to providing exceptional orthodontic care all of our patients and will do whatever it takes to ensure that your child receives the specialized attention they deserve.
